Selecting Herbs For Herb Gardening
I would like to say selecting easy herbs to grow can be difficult. It is different with everyone. What is generally listed as "easy" to grow, I find to be difficult. What is generally listed as "difficult", I seem to have good luck in most cases. Herb gardening also varies depending on which part of the country you are living in at the time, along with other things such as the weather.
When herb gardening you may want to go with a theme such as culinary herbs, fragrant herbs or ornamental herbs. Personally I like a hodgepodge mix with different textures and colors. Sometimes I just toss left over seeds and plants of "what ever" in a pot to see what happens. You can grow just one or several herbs per pot!
The prettiest and most impressive pots I have seen while herb gardening, however, have several herbs per pot. I like to select a combination of low or spreading plants with medium to tall plants with some ornamental herbs or flowers for color if needed. For example, thyme, gotu kola, dandelion (yes, the weed), chamomile or prostrate rosemary are low growing. I would plant them around the edge or in front. Medium to tall plants include catmint (smaller than catnip), basils, mints, lemon balm, chive clumps, marigolds, miniature roses, violets, parsley and salad greens (which can add colors and textures). Taller accent plants could include lavender, garlic, lemon grass, sages, up-right rosemary, echinacea, salvias, verbena, ginger, comfrey and borage. Scented geraniums are a wonderful way to add texture and fragrance. They have a wide variety from prostrate and creeping to upright.
When herb gardening exotic and rare herbs from around the world, you will see that they can be grown in containers easier than trying to grow them in the garden. In containers, you can manipulate their environment by moving them to an area that best represents their natural growing conditions. For example, ginseng and goldenseal will need forest like shading, low temperatures for wintering over, and a special soil mix.
